SenecaBlue Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Coaches What are the reasons to run a rocket sweep. What advantages do you have when running the rocket as opposed to running the jet. Thanks Quote
coacher Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Coach - First, in my mind, after having coached multiple sweep plays, the rocket gets the ball in the back's hands quicker, allows the back to be @ full speed better than any other sweep play & allows the back better vision overall. Secondly, I believe that if you already run regular belly motion, it adds another degree of deception to your offense. A small detail I'll admit but with today's defenses every bit helps. It also adds the option mantra, "speed in space" to your offense in an immediate manner. Quote

tcm57 Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Coaches: Could you please tell me the difference between "Rocket" & "Jet". Thanks, tm Quote
coacher Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 In a nutshell, jet comes off of flat motion with a handoff from the Qb - the rocket is a full speed belly motion where the ball isn't snapped until the motion back is @ or near the Fb's feet & the ball is pitched from the QB. Quote
Guest coacho Posted December 12, 2003 Report Posted December 12, 2003 Coach, On Rocket which way does the QB open and which back receives the pitch. Coacho Quote
bhubb Posted December 12, 2003 Report Posted December 12, 2003 Was rocket, the sweep play that Navy ran down on the goal line I think twice for touchdowns against Army? Does anyone have both jet and rocket in the playbook? Are the compliment plays the same for both? We run the jet series...are there some compliment plays with rocket we jet guys should be aware of that we should add to our playbook? Just wanna be more dangerous!! Quote
cougar Posted December 12, 2003 Report Posted December 12, 2003 I am hoping a lot of these questions are answered in Coach Elrod's upcoming book. I believe it may be available early in 04. Quote
Bob Dougherty Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Is the rocket sweep the same as the fly.Is there a fake to the fb.I know the rocket is with motion .do you run like I have seen it done without motion to a back over the tackle. What does the tackle do ?I think in the fly he rips inside and blocks outside.I have thought about running the fly but wondering about practice time . bellyiso Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Coach Elrod, Could you post the blocking rules for the rocket? Quote
Wes Elrod Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Coach Elrod, Could you post the blocking rules for the rocket? There is more than one Rocket....I will post rules for the one in the video. Do you know how we count defenders to the outside 1-5? If you do not; rules may not help. Play call in parenthesis should be Rocket 29 Quote
bellyiso Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Are most of the rockets in your blocking the edges book? Do you have another book coming out? Quote
Wes Elrod Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Are most of the rockets in your blocking the edges book? Do you have another book coming out? No only 2.....we had just started fooling with it New book will be out in about 2 weeks......book is done, but I am trying to finish the video. It will include all that we do with rockets....Rocket school is Wofford College Quote
coach iannucci Posted December 17, 2003 Report Posted December 17, 2003 the rocket also stops some of the option stunts (echo / back to back - runs right by them Quote
aldo59 Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 For those of you who did not get to see the GA 5A state title game, Camden Co. broke the game open by running Rocket Sweep. Five attempts for over 100 yards, mainly in the 2nd half. Camden Co. defeated Valdosta 21-7. Quote
coacher Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 Coach Elrod - Is your latest book ready? Quote
Coach Metz Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 Check the annoucements section. He explains what's up with the book. Have a Happy New Year, Metz Quote
skuggbo Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Coaches, I want to combine the Rocket and Jet series as mutch as possible, I mean using the sweep, dive or trap, a belly, sally or other cntr and a bootleg. So basically I want 5 or 6 plays that are executed pretty mutch the same for OL for both the jet and the rocket. We are running 2wr, 2 wb (ace) and a trips out of ace formation. Any ideas. Robert Quote
jsanny Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Trap either to or away from motion, gut, waggle, belly, down Quote
skuggbo Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 It's sounds like the plays I want. How can I simplify these blockingschemes? Basically I want to compress it into few few blockingschemes, my OL is really new. Is it any one who can show me out of this formation? Regards, Robert Quote
Coach CB Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 Coach Elrod, I know this topic is a little out-dated, but could you post your rules for your Rocket. Quote
buckeye7525 Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Coach, I know I'm not Coach E but we got almost our stuff from him. Here are our rules PSTE : Blk #1 PST : Tan to #5 PSG: Pull for #5 Center : scoop BSG : scoop BST : scoop Bste: scoop PS WB: block #2 SE : stalk #3 BS WB : full speed motion to one footb behind fbs heels. Stay flat after passing that point. Catch pitch and read block on #2 Quote
Wes Elrod Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Here is an example of a typical rocket................this one is to the (2) line surface THUS # 1 (outside count) is on top of the OT; so the OT will bypass (TAN) up to # 5 (LBer) (outside count) WB will block # 2 (outside count) Wide Outs will block man over in space. PSG will pull to "daylight" Coaching Point: I "think" in my humble opinion......for rockets to be successful NOW (present time). The FB's heels need top be at 3.5 yds.........thus the rocket snap point is about 1 foot behind the FB's spot. We started running the play with FB's heels at 4 yds (move him up NOW!!)..................pitch needs to be 16 feet in length; anything less is simply a "lucky" toss sweep. Here is a great example of a rocket in an Eagle formation............you can see the TAN by the OT and the WB block on # 2. enjoy https://vimeo.com/83764064 oce Quote
buckeye7525 Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Coach Elrod, do you give the FB any particular guidelines to make sure that he's at 3.5yds on Rocket? Our base alignment is toes at 4 yds and we just tell our FB to take a big step up on Rocket. Is this in line with what you'd recommend? Quote
