4-4 Defense

Coaches, what is the best way to defeat the 4-4 defense? Does it help to spread the defense and run wedges and the buck sweep or stay in tight?

We're on a run of playing 4-4 teams. The teams looked to take away our Jet and Jet Trap by pinching the tackles and firing the ends up field. We found success by widening our splits which gets us some misalignments against our unbalanced look, and running Jet Belly between those tackles and ends. We expect Jet to work well, as the teams tend to keep their OLBs tight and off the line. When we get the LBs moving to the unbalance we'll run Jet Ice short side.

Denny Crehan said vs. an eight man front to begin off tackle. The Belly series is the best way to attack them. They can not defend keep pass & also the belly play. Other plays that are good are bucksweep to the SE flank & 32 power to the TE flank. Belly Option to the SE flank is also good if you are an option team.

There are lots of things you can do to a 4-4 defense. I personally go double TE and run belly plays or use play action passes , oh yeah depending on how well coached they are the TE waggle works well also.

here is a little wrinkle we use to get our best players in space. if the playside olb is reading the insert block of the playside wing on jet belly to the split side use jet motion faking belly and throw the bubble to the motion man
